During the past few decades, the significance and utility of planning and implementing education systems to various sectors of the national economies has gathered momentum, specially in countries in the Asian region. Continuing education and extension programmes of questionable quality in various areas have mushroomed in Sri Lanka. However, many of these programmes conducted by reputed institutions have been developed and supported by well established internationally known Universities, making significant contributions directly to human resources development and corporate growth.

Royal Institute inaugurated the Department of English in the year 1990 launching the spoken English programme. On account of its tremendous popularity the Department of English introduced more English courses, among them were the Practical English, Advanced English, Business English, Elocution and English for Juniors.

Another area which the Institute has ventured into  is the field of computing with the establishment of the Royal Institute of Computer studies (RICS).  The rapidly growing economic and business environment calls for a large number of trained computer professionals. Most youngsters also have chosen computing as a career. Object oriented programming and the programming environment are greatly  sought after skills  in the  computer industry and  RICS is well geared to provide the necessary training.

Royal Institute launched  its University of London Degree programme truly providing tertiary education preparing students for internationally recognised degrees of the University of London in  a  number of disciplines. Royal Institute is proud to be associated with it exclusively to prepare students for their prestigious degrees since 1990. Hundreds of students now take advantage from this degree programme. The performance of the students right through has been  most encouraging. Almost all students who followed the Royal Institute courses leading to the degrees of the University of London have passed their respective degrees very impressively and the results are among the best even by world standards.
