UNIVERSITY OF CAMBRIDGE - G.C.E. ADVANCED LEVEL

 

INTRODUCTION

Cambridge qualifications are recognised world-wide as evidence of significant educational achievement and satisfy admission requirements of most colleges abroad for pursuing higher studies.

 

Royal Institute is one of the pioneers in preparing students for London A/Level examinations. The higher education wing of Royal Institute, Royal Institute of Colombo, offers courses leading to internationally reputed degrees of the University of London.

 

Royal Institute with highly-qualified and experienced teachers provides quality education.  There is an ideal environment for studies with a modern computer laboratory, well equipped science laboratories and a clean and well ventilated purpose built modern classrooms.

 

The Institute has a well stocked library which can be used for private study and borrowing.  The library is kept open on all weekdays. 

 

The Institute also offers a wide range of extra-curricular and co-curricular activities and maintains the highest level of discipline.

 

 

DURATION AND TIME SCHEDULE

This is a two-year full time course beginning in 3rd week of June each year.  Classes will be held normally from 8.00 a.m to 1.30 p.m on weekdays.  The Institute reserves the right to change the time schedules with prior notice to students.

 

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Passes in not less than 5 subjects including Maths and English in G C E O/L examination with A’s or B’s in 4 subjects, of which at least 2 subjects should be in the subjects to be offered for the A/Level course.  Although preference will be given to students with better results, others would be considered based on the previous academic records.  An above average competence in English is compulsory.

 

SCHOLARSHIPS

Scholarships are offered to students in order to motivate them to maintain a high level of performance and are subject to withdrawal if they fail to maintain the required standard.

 

Royal Institute offers a limited number of scholarships for students, on a first come first served basis.  Additionally, merit scholarships will also be awarded on impressive performance in Term end examinations.  These schemes envisage the award of either 50% or 25% scholarships initially.  However, if they consistently achieve ‘A’ grades in all subjects in the Term end examinations during the first year, the scholarships may be increased to 100% during the second year.

  1. Students who have passed the local GCE O/Levels securing 8 or more ‘A’ passes including English and Mathematics or 6 or more ‘A’ passes in the London/Cambridge O/Levels are eligible for scholarships on admission to the Cambridge  A/Level course.

  2. Students who do not qualify themselves for a scholarship on admission would yet have an opportunity to get a scholarship if they score ‘A’ grades in all subjects in the Term end examinations.

 

SUBJECTS COMBINATIONS AVAILABLE

Students may select four subjects from any one of the following subject combinations A, B or C.  

A combination once selected, cannot be changed subsequently.

(1)   Physics , Biology,  Chemistry,  Mathematics

 

COMBINATION (B)  Mathematics

(1)   Physics, Chemistry, Computing, Mathematics

(2)   Physics, Computing, Mathematics, Further Mathematics

 

COMBINATION (C) Commerce

(1)   Economics,  Accounting, Business Studies

        and one of the following

        Mathematics, Computing

 

APPLICATIONS FOR EXAMINATION

Application formalities will be handled by the Institute.

Monthly fees should be paid before the 10th of each month.  A surcharge of 5% will be levied if the payment is delayed by one month.

 

If a student wishes to leave the Institute, notice of such leaving should be given in writing one month (30 days) prior to the date of leaving.  Students who fail to do so, will forfeit the refundable deposit.

 

UNIFORM

Students should wear the college uniform with black shoes when attending classes.  New entrants should obtain the relevant voucher from the school Secretary and purchase  their uniforms from the school.

 

APPLICATION FOR ENROLMENT

All applications for enrolment should be made on the relevant form (obtainable from the Institute office) together with two stamp sized photographs and photocopies of the following documents.

i)      Birth Certificate (issued by the Registrar General’s office)

ii)    O/L results(or relevant educational qualifications)

A character certificate or the leaving certificate from the Head of the previous school should be submitted along with the duly completed application form for enrolment.
