G.C.E. A/L LOCAL SYLLABUS - ENGLISH MEDIUM

INTRODUCTION

Royal Institute International School of Higher Education at Havelock Town conducts full-time courses leading to Edexcel examinations. Its branch school in Maharagama teaches from the Nursery upto Edexcel examinations and Sri Lanka A/L (English Medium) examinations. The  Nugegoda branch  school teaches from the Nursery upto Cambridge International examinations. Royal Institute of Colombo offers courses leading to prestigious degrees of the University of London.

 

Royal Institute has been registered by the Ministry of Education for preparing students for the Sri Lankan GCE Advanced .Level examination and for certifying Science Practical work, Project work and Assignments of GCE (A/L) of the Institute’s candidates following the course.

Royal Institute, as the pioneer, has 17 years of experience in teaching for the Local A/L (English Medium) examinations.

 

Highest quality of education is provided by the experienced and specialist panel of teachers.  The school also has an ideal atmosphere for studies and well equipped laboratories for Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

 

 

LIBRARY

The school has a large collection of all recommended text and other books, journals etc. which can be used for private study and borrowing.  The Library is generally kept open on all days of the week.  Students are encouraged to avail themselves of this facility right through the programme and make use of the reference facility.

 

The school offers a wide range of extra-curricular and co-curricular activities in order to provide a balanced education and maintains the highest level of discipline.

 

SCHOLARSHIPS

Scholarships are offered to students in order to motivate them to maintain a high level of performance and are subject to withdrawal if they fail to maintain the required standard.

 

Royal Institute offers a limited number of scholarships on admission, on a first come first served basis.  Additionally, merit scholarships will also be awarded on impressive performance in Term end examinations.  These schemes envisage the award of either 50% or 25% scholarships initially.  However, if they consistently achieve ‘A’ grades in all subjects in all the Term end examinations during the first year, the scholarships may be increased to 100% during the second year.

  1. Students who have passed the Local GCE O/Levels securing 8 or more ‘A’ passes including English and Mathematics or 6 or more ‘A’ passes in the London GCE O/Levels including Maths and English are eligible for scholarships on admission to the Local GCE A/Level (English Medium) course.

  2. Students who do not qualify themselves for a scholarship on admission would yet have an opportunity to get a scholarship if they score ‘A’ grades in all subjects in the Term end examinations.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Passes in not less than 6 subjects including Maths and English in G.C.E. O/L examination with at least 3 B passes and preferably a minimum of 2 B passes to be in the offering subjects for the A/Level course.  However  preference will be given to students with better results when enrolling students for this course.  An above average competence in English is compulsory.

Note : Additionally, students will be taught General English.  They will also be prepared for the Common General Knowledge subject..

 

DURATION AND TIME SCHEDULES

This is a two year full time course. Classes will be normally held from 7.55 a.m. to 1.45 p.m. on weekdays.  The Institute reserves the right to change time schedules with prior notice to students.

Monthly fees should be paid before the 10th of each month.  A surcharge of 5% would be levied if the payment is delayed beyond one month.

 

If a student wishes to leave the Institute, notice of such leaving should be given in writing one month (30 days) prior to the date of leaving.  Students who fail to do so, will forfeit the refundable deposit.

 

UNIFORM

Students should wear the college uniform and with black shoes when attending classes.  New entrants should obtain the relevant document from Secretary  and purchase their uniforms from the school.

 

APPLICATION FOR ENROLMENT

All applications for enrolment should be made on the relevant document (obtainable from the Institute office) together with two stamp size photographs and photocopies of the following documents.

(a)    Birth Certificate

(b)    Certificates of educational qualifications

 

A character certificate or the leaving certificate from the Head of the previous school should be submitted along with the duly completed application form for enrolment.
